still freezing

I have installed a clean version of XP Pro and it seems like internet
activity beyond a few page loads or any download freezes my entire OS. I
connect via a DLink DFE 530 over to a router on high speed access. I wiped my
drive and have installed the drivers for ethernet cards, motherboard and
sound card. I have had 47 hard crashes in the last day trying to get this to
work, Any ideas at all or should I just go back to Win 2K, I never had
problems like this with that OS. I am beginning to feel like a sucker for
buying this. Is there some goofy protection system in this OS that I dont
know about? I have no firewall and have turned off the win XP one that keeps
popping up, still I get freezing every time.

47 hard crashes !! it's a fair bet that you have either hardware that
is marginal or faulty, which has nothing to do with the OS.

1. You need to do some diagnostics and determine what /were the
problem lies, first up is the machine capable of running XP, if it
ran win2000 I would say yes ...., but best to make sure.
2. Test RAM with memtest86 http://www.memtest.com
D/L and run HDD diagnostics from the HDD manufacurer's site
Make sure the power supply is of adaquate wattage [not less than
350w] and putting out reliablesteady 12, 5,& 3.3v, if you can't test
for this I would even suggest you replace it whilst doing your
hardware testing merely to rule it out of the eqation.

memtest.com? Sorry to ask but what is useful on this site, all I see is a
bunch of advertising and a page of 100 links most of which are a scam, any
other ideas, I am unsure whether this is strictlyhardware as I can do almost
anything else except internet downloads and extended surfing. As for hardware
I have P$ 3.0 Gig with a asus p5p800 motherboard and 1 Gig of RAM. Power
Supply is a 450 Watt monster so that is definetly not the problem.

As you were told before in a rather lengthy thread - do hardware
testing. The correct url for Memtest86+ is www.memtest.org. Again, here
are hardware troubleshooting steps:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Troubleshooting

If you can't do the hardware testing yourself, take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop instead.

Since you have done a clean install, you have effectively proved that
the issues arise from faulty hardware.

Correction on the Memtest86+ url - I should have looked at my own links.
The correct link is:

47 hard crashes !! it's a fair bet that you have either hardware that

Make sure the power supply is of adaquate wattage [not less than

for this I would even suggest you replace it whilst doing your

Actually, you want the updated Memtest86+ which you can get at

Chris Brady, the person who wrote Memtest86, turned it over to a team of
programmers quite a few years ago. Memtest86+ is the current version
that is being actively developed.

You need the proper hardware for XP.
