Status/toolbars still won't save

I have followed all presented steps but the status and toolbars still reset
themselves, go hiding (in the case of the status bar) and relocate
themselves after almost every reboot. Is MS working on a fix?

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/IE/notoolbaar.htm

Try pressing F11. If that doesn't work read on.

From Doug Knox:

Close any open Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer windows.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

There are 3 sub keys: Explorer, ShellBrowser, WebBrowser'

In each of these sub-keys is the entry for ITBarLayout

For IE Toolbars: The WebBrowser Sub-key directly affects IE.
For Windows Explorer Toolbars: The Explorer Sub-key directly affects
Explorer.
The ShellBrowser sub-key may affect IE as well. Its effect on IE and
Windows Explorer is unknown at this time, so if the first option doesn't
work, delete the ITBarLayout value here as well.

Choose the relavent sub-key and right click where it says ITBarLayout and
select Delete.

The deleted value will automatically be recreated for you.

You may want to right click on the main key (above) and select Export. This
will allow you to backup the contents of the whole key, including subkeys.

Or try this utility, which does the same thing:

The link bars are still in the same place but the status bar has gone AWOL
again. I haven't figured out the exact sequence to replicate yet but it
clearly has something to do with using CTRL-N to open up new instances of
the browser.

Some have had luck with this procedure:

Close all other windows.
Open Windows Explorer.
Make sure that the status bar is showing.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | View and click the option to make all folders
like this one.
Reboot.

If that doesn't do it, here's a more thorough method from Mike Burgess:

If your status bar disappears when opening a new IE 6 browser window:

1) With (only one) IE open, click View, select: Status Bar
2) Right-click on IE's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbar"
3) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)
4) Open Windows Explorer, click View, select: Status Bar
5) Right-click on Explorer's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbar"
6) Click Tools | Folder Options | View tab
7) Click the "Apply to all folders" button.
8) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)
9) Open IE to any page, right-click on a link and select: "Open in New
Window"
10)Verify that these Registry entries exist:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
"Show_StatusBar"="yes"
"Show_URLinStatusBar"="yes"

Things seem to be behaving correctly this morning. The steps I took were:

1. Set the toolbars in MSIE the way I wanted.
2. Close everything and reboot.
3. Recreate the registry key and reboot
4. Remove then reapply the status bar in Windows Explorer apply to all views
and reboot

I had previously tried all of these steps but not in this precise sequence
and not with all of the additional reboots. My hopes are up a bit, but I've
gone as long as a week without the settings reverting themselves before.
I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Both keys are there. The next time the status bar takes itself out
I'll
check again.

Thanks

Wowbagger,
If your status bar disappears when opening a new IE 6 browser
window:

1) With (only one) IE open, click View, select: Status Bar
2) Right-click on IE's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbar"
3) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)

Verify that these Registry entries exist:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Show_StatusBar"="yes"
"Show_URLinStatusBar"="yes"

[Exception]
In some cases the "Remember last window size" info becomes corrupted
in
the
Registry.

The link bars are still in the same place but the status bar has
gone
AWOL
again. I haven't figured out the exact sequence to
replicate
yet
but
it
clearly has something to do with using CTRL-N to open up new
instances
of
the browser.

Thanks. I'll watch it over the next couple of days... typically
the
settings would reset themselves after a reboot or after a couple
of
days.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/IE/notoolbaar.htm

Try pressing F11. If that doesn't work read on.

From Doug Knox:

Close any open Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer windows.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

There are 3 sub keys: Explorer, ShellBrowser, WebBrowser'

In each of these sub-keys is the entry for ITBarLayout

For IE Toolbars: The WebBrowser Sub-key directly
affects
IE.
For Windows Explorer Toolbars: The Explorer Sub-key directly
affects
Explorer.
The ShellBrowser sub-key may affect IE as well. Its
effect
on
IE
and
Windows Explorer is unknown at this time, so if the first
option
doesn't
work, delete the ITBarLayout value here as well.

Choose the relavent sub-key and right click where it says
ITBarLayout
and
select Delete.

The deleted value will automatically be recreated for you.

You may want to right click on the main key (above) and select
Export.
This
will allow you to backup the contents of the whole key,
including
subkeys.

Or try this utility, which does the same thing:

Things seem to be behaving correctly this morning. The steps I took were:

1. Set the toolbars in MSIE the way I wanted.
2. Close everything and reboot.
3. Recreate the registry key and reboot
4. Remove then reapply the status bar in Windows Explorer apply to all views
and reboot

I had previously tried all of these steps but not in this precise sequence
and not with all of the additional reboots. My hopes are up a bit, but I've
gone as long as a week without the settings reverting themselves before.
I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Is there any way to trace what is changing the settings"
The first thing to do is to scan your system for the possibility of
unknown\unwanted spyware or parasites that may be causing your problem(s).

Note: "AUTOTKIT.EXE" from HP is known to cause Toolbar resets.
