Static IP Address Sharing Problem

A

Andy Baker

I have a small network with a Windows 2000 server and 3 XP Pro workstations.
2 of them use dynamic IP address and 1 is a static IP address. Everything
was working fine until I needed to test a piece of hardware which required
me to change the static IP address on the PC. I did what I needed to, then
changed the static IP address back to what it was before, but I now find
that I cannot share any printers / folders on the network. The sharing
appears to work OK, but the other PCs on the network cannot see the folders.
If I change to automatically assign IP addresses, everything works normally,
and the static IP PC can access folders on other PCs on the network. I have
tried re-sharing the folders, re-installing file and printer sharing, and
setting up the other PCs via permissions, but cannot get them to see the
folders. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

This can happen if you share your folders by IP address instead
of computer name, e.g.
\\192.168.0.67\Some Folder" instead of
"\\Some Computer\Some Folder"

You must also make sure that all PCs use he same workgroup
name.

Thanks for getting back to me. I am not using IP address to share folders,
and I have tried reconnecting to the domain - but with the same problem. I
have tried to ping the PC with the static IP address. If I type in ping
192.168.1.10 (the static IP address) it works, but if I try pinging STAT28
(the computer name) it doesn't. The computer returns 'Pinging STAT28
[192.168.1.14] with 32 bytes of data - so somehow it is getting the IP
address wrong, which is possibly why the shares are not working correctly.
I also found that when I reboot the PC with the static IP address, it
hangs for a long time on 'Applying Computer Settings' and if I check the
error log, I am getting an error 'The PrintQueue Container could not be
found because the DNS Domain Name could not be retrieved. Error :54b' I
assume this is connected to the sharing problem.

Sorted it. I had not set the preferred DNS server entry on the Static IP
machine. Did that, then rebooted all PCs and it is now working normally.
Thanks for yout help.

It was probably an issue where one of the other computers had been assigned
the IP that the static machine was supposed to have. If perhaps you had
tried to turn off the other machines first, then assigned the static IP,
then booted the other machines, it may have solved your problem.

On a side note, the static IP machine should have an assigned IP that falls
OUTSIDE the range that is dynamically assigned so that such problems do not
arise.

I had set the static IP to be an excluded address on the server so that
shouldn't have occurred. However, at least it's working.

Thanks for the reply. It was just a thought on my part, and I hadn't seen
it mentioned. That, and you just never know how much knowledge a person has
on the subject they are working with. Glad it's working for you now.
