startup/shutdown problem

My Toshiba laptop has suddenly started freezing during startup and shutdown.
I get as far as my desktop picture but no icons or taskbar appears, when
shuting down i get to the 'shutting down' screen but doesnt switch itself off.

I have numerous entries in my event viewer such as:

Hanging application pcmm.exe, version 9.1.0.2, hang module hungapp, version
0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation.

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\D

please help

If you can get to Windows at all (safe mode?) try running msconfig (Start >
run > msconfig). pcmm.exe appears to belong to PC MightMax diagnostic tool.
Try turning that any any other service or program off at startup by
unchecking the application int he services and startup tabs.
