First, determine which programs are starting that you would like stop.

Second, open those programs and look for an option that allows the program
to start when the system is started and disable that option.

Third, if this option is not available in those programs, look in the
Start/All Programs/Start Up menu for a shortcut to these programs. If found,
delete that shortcut or move it to another folder on the All Programs menu.

Fourth, if none of these steps apply, go to Start/Run and type msconfig
and click OK. Select the Start Up Tab and look for an entry to the program
there. Remove the check mark from the program. Apply/OK.

Hi

From Start>Run type

msconfig

then click on the startup tab. Uncheck any programs in there that you don't
want starting up with Windows, then reboot your system.

First thing is to check the options in the particular programs you don't
want to load and see if there is an option for it not to load. That
should cover the vast majority of programs. If that doesn't work go to
Start | Run. Type in Msconfig. Hit Ok. On the start up tab uncheck
the ones you don't want to load. Click apply, then ok. When you reboot
Msconfig will show a message window about being in diagnostic mode.
Just check the box to not have it warn you again.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start. Many can easily
and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG
from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the
programs you don't want to start automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose
of speeding up boot time or running the minimum number of
programs. Despite what many people tell you, you should be
concerned, not with how many of these programs you run, but
which. Some of them can hurt performance severely, but others
have no effect on performance.

Most of us boot once a day or so. In the overall scheme of
things, a few minutes saved by a faster boot once a day isn't
very important. Personally I power up when I get up in the
morning and go get my coffee. When I come back it's done booting;
I don't know how long it took and I don't care.

If the program performs a valuable function for you, that's
likely to be more important than how long it takes to boot. On
the other hand, if it's useless to you (and some of these may be)
then you should certainly stop it from starting automatically.

So don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you
should do is determine what each program is, what its value is to
you, and what the cost in performance is of its running all the
time. You can get more information about these with at
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't find it
there, try google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent
informed decision about what you want to keep and what you want
to get rid of.
