Startup Problems

Gateway PC
AMD Athlon 950 MHZ
512 RAM
Windows XP Pro Everything updated.

While recently using this older computer, I started to notice there were
gray lines running through the screen. I googled this problem and learned
that the video card most likely was dying. The problem continued to get
worse so I bought a new video card (ATI 128 MB Standard Card). Before I could
put this card in the problem got worse. The computer would randomly freeze
up at different intervals. Sometimes it would take 4 hours to do it
sometimes it would do it in 4 minutes. Nothing would work not even CTR ALT
DEL. Finally it got so bad that when I go to restart the computer it would
freeze so quick I couldnt get into windows. So Now I installed the new video
card, Restart the video card popped up on the screen to let me know it found
it ok. Then it would go to the Windows did not start correctly, Start
windows normally or Safe mode. No matter which one I go to before the Splash
screen comes up the computer restarts automatically. Sometimes It will do it
during the splash screen and a blue screen dispays with nothing on it
briefly.

I have tried the following-
Swapping Ram Chips out, which both test ok and the problem still happens.
Swapped both Master and Slave HD's out with Spares.
Unplugged IDE cable with DVD Drives.

I have also heard of a virus similar to this, I cant see this as a
possibility because the computer was set with Mcafee to update and scan the
whole system every night. Also ran several Spyware checkers, Killbox and
Formatted very frequently.

Any help would be great.

A bit of overkill, I would suggest you attempt booting in safe mode,
uninstall the old video card drivers, and then reboot to normal mode, install
the new video card drivers, that should take care of the problem.

A suggestion, when swapping out equipment, keep your troubleshooting ideas
to the newest change, ie the video card. else it gets confusing and you may
have to take multiple steps to fix multiple problems.

Try booting to the XP CD, if display is ok, then you know the issue is with
the drivers. ie use the new card to boot with.

I started troubleshooting after the video card until I exausted all
posibilities. I cant load any of the Safe modes, nor comand prompt. After I
hit enter for the Comand Prompt it will load the files it normally loads then
it will restart.
