Startup Problem

For the past two days I've been receiving this error message when I boot up
my PC (runs on Windows XP Professional):

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent
further damage to your computer.

REGISTRY_ERROR

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If
this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for
any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you
need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer,
press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x00000051 (0x00000008, 0x00000000, 0xE1019740, 0xE11C7CA4)"

I haven't had any new hard/software installed recently so I tried disabling
the BIOS memory options mentioned but to no avail. I was also unable to
start the PC in Safe Mode. Using the last known good configuration seemed to
be the only way to get it to work.

Once the computer let me log in, I did a thorough spyware/adware/virus scan
using several reliable programs and deleted all the found threats. I also
tried all of the suggestions mentioned in the Windows startup troubleshooter
but the error remained. Finally after fooling around with a few things and
restarting several times, the error message was gone. I even rebooted a few
times to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

It would appear that everything had been resolved but today when I booted up
my PC I got the darned error again. This time I couldn't get it to startup
at all. Not in Safe Mode, not by using the last known good configuration
settings, nor through any of the other Advanced Startup Options. And that's
where I'm stuck. I've tried fooling around with it a bit but no dice.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and I should mention that I'm
no expert so I'd be more likely to understand things if they were in layman's
terms. ^_^;;

I tried, ( I have the same problem), but it will not load the recovery
console either. The same message comes up while trying to load the recovery
console. Any idea if this is as described a registry problem or do you
believe the problem to be something else?
