Startup problem because of a antivirus program

Hello everybody.

I newly formatted my computer and had to install all my programs on the
computer again. These programs were for example Nero, Microsoft Office,
Norton Antivirus and things like that.

But at my Security Center in my Control Panel it said my virus protection
was off (even though I just had installed my Norton Antivirus 2003, it's
still valid). First I clicked the optin that I was going to monitor my virus
program myself. But then I wanted to try something new and clicked on "Get
another antivirus program? HOW?". Then a internet explorer window opened and
came with various suggestions about free trial antivirus programs.
I decided to download eTrust EZ antivirus 12 month free trial. Well I
downloaded it and installed it, it started to run a scan right away and when
it was finished it said that the computer had to be restarted. I clicked OK
but now when my computer starts up and Windows XP comes up it freezes. I can
move the mouse pointer but I can't click on anything. If I try to click on
something the mouse pointer changes into the waiting pointer and is like that
forever. I can't hit CTRL ALT DEL, nothing happens. But I did try to hit CTRL
ALT DEL when Windows had just started and not all startup programs had
started. Then I got the windows task manager window to open. But as soon as
this antivirus program started everything froze again.

So I need to get rid of this antivirus program. I was thinking how could I
do that? It's obvious that this antivirus program is causing this, perhaps it
doesn't work having two antivirus programs installed at the same time. But I
just want to uninstall this program. I don't know how to start Windows in
safe mode, would that be a possability to remove the program? I need to
disable this program to automatically start up when Windows starts...well at
least that is my guess.

Please help me! I would really appreciate it...

Thank you! :)

Ps: Please excuse my English, I'm from Iceland.

Hi,

To my knowledge, there are two issues here,

(1) Virus protection off: I can't find anywhere in the Security Center that
lists the status of virus protection, but it may be my own fault. In any
case, when you install later version of Symantec's products with the latest
updates, it will ask you and, if you click Yes, then take control of
firewall and anti-virus function. This is part of their updates tailored to
SP2 to avoid potential conflicts between Windows SP2 and its own software.

(2) Conflicts: It is highly likely that you will encounter certain forms of
conflict if you installed two or more anti-virus programs or firewall
software although not every time. PS: This is why, as mentioned above, some
programs such as Symantec's NIS suit will try to take control of firewall
and anti-virus and will not share the work with other programs.

So back to how to solve your problems.

(1) Safe Mode: Restart (or start) your computer and press F8 during the
computer's initial boot screen (that is when the screen is black with
several white lines of device messages) and before Windows logo page shows
up. You will have to do it again, if Windows logo page shows up. After you
press F8, you will see a list of choice for different boot options, and one
(should be on the top of the list) is for Safe Mode. Use your keyboard up
and down keys to the Safe Mode and hit the Enter key.

(2) Remove the program: After you logged into Safe Mode, go Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs to un-install the program.

You're right about that you shall try to uninstall the program in Safe Mode,
in which, most services and drivers including anti-virus will not be loaded
and thus will not have conflicts problems.

One final note - for whichever program that you wish to uninstall, make sure
to read its help files or other documents about topics similar to "totally
remove the program and registry files". In some but not all cases, leftover
files may still cause you problem.

Hope this helps.

PS: Iceland, a beautiful country :)
