Startup issues with Windows XP SP2

I recently upgraded my CPU and mainboard. However, doing this caused Windows
XP SP2 to give me errors and not start up. I did a repair installation to fix
the problem, but unfortunately my disk for Windows XP is for build 2600. Now
when Windows starts up it spends about 5 minutes saying "Windows is starting
up..." before I can log in. It also takes a long time to shut down as well. I
tried to access the Windows Update site to see if I could fix the problem
there, but Internet Explorer just crashes when it tries to open it.

Is there any fix to this problem without having to completely reinstall
Windows fresh?
