Starting wupdmgr.exe ...

Hallo NG!
WindowsXP/HE/SP3, OfficeXP/Pro/SP3, IE7, CPU P4/2.8G, 1GB Ram
Starting wupdmgr.exe starts IE7 and loads the pagecode - according to the
blue bar in lower right corner of the window. Also a tab 'Microsoft
Windows Update' is created and the pagesource can be displayed. But that's
it. The window itself stays blank. Any ideas what could be wrong?
Thanks!

Can the system update automatically, Helge ?
If not, see:

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

The most recent entries are at the *bottom* of the log.

Also, see if this is pertinent to the issue:

You receive a scripting error or a blank page when you visit the Windows
Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836948

If not, see:

Yes, it can and does regularly.
How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

Checked and read file after a call of wupdmgr. No entry in file created
for today.
The most recent entries are at the *bottom* of the log.

Also, see if this is pertinent to the issue:

You receive a scripting error or a blank page when you visit the Windows
Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836948

Checked that and downloaded/installed scripten.exe for XP as recommended.
Installer Error (no error of course):
Setup has detected that the Service pack version if this system is newer
than the update you are applying.
There is no need to install this update.

There are no error indications at all when I call wupdmgr. Just an empty
window within IE7.
What about security settings in Internetoptions? Which one need to be
checked?
Thanks so far.

What happens when you click the Windows Update link on the Start
Menu ?

Open a Command Prompt and register the associated .dll files, Helge

regsvr32 dispex.dll

Do the same for

jscript.dll
scrobj.dll
scrrun.dll
vbscript.dll
wshcon.dll
wshext.dll

See if the page is now displayed properly.
If no joy, try registering this XML .dll and the ActiveX-related .dll of
Microsoft Update

regsvr32 msxml1.dll [ that's a one (1) and not an l (L) ]
regsvr32 muweb.dll

Did all of the .dlls register properly ?
Is the page viewable now ?
