Hallo NG!
WindowsXP/HE SP2, OfficeXP/Pro SP3, CPU P4/2.8G, 1GB Ram

Is it possible to save the complete c: partition with 'xxcopy /clone' orvia knoppix to d: and then later in case of virus infection clean up c:*completely* (fdisk /mbr) and restore from d: (via knoppix). Will the system boot?

xxcopy can't create a bootable copy for WIndows XP/2000/NT (95/98/ ME yes.)
I don't know anything about knoppix except from
http://www.knoppix.net/about.php which indicates it's a linux utility.

CloneMaxx is a free utility that creates a disk image but I'm not certain if
it's bootable.

Casper XP is great program but isn't freeware

Last note: I would stay away from Norton Ghost

I found from upper link, that it handles drives only, no partitions!

I understand the info from the link, that the result in case of XP is not bootable as you already said, but could be made by setting the partition ACTIVE an writing the MBR, both with FDISK.
