Starting Services???

David

Good Day,
Re: Windows 2000 Professional Services

The Remote Connection Manager, Auto Connection Manager and
Remote Registry Service were turned stopped and set to
disable, and the option to turn them back on is grayed out
and view their properties will not show on screen. I
think the property window is coming up, as the services
box says that "you must first close properties box", but
there is no box to be found, only a reboot will close it.

Are there settings in the Registry that turn these on?

Thanks,

David

Hi David,

The following Web Page Section titled "Emergency Restoration procedure" clearly
explains how to set service startup types using the registry editor.

Windows 2000 Services Tweak guide
http://www.3dspotlight.com/tweaks/win2k_services/print.shtml

BTW, the symptoms you describe do not sound like they would be caused by setting
those 3 services to disabled. It sounds to me like the Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Service is not Started. So while you are doing your other edits make certain that
the Start value for the service is set to Automatic.

Also, since the blaster worm can cause RPC to stop, make certain that you have the
latest patch installed. For more information see the following Microsoft Knowledge
Base Article:

KB824146 - Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-039: Buffer Overrun In RPCSS Service
Could Allow Code Execution
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=824146

And here is some more information, and links to information, about Windows 2000
Services/Processes:

KB263201 - Default Processes in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=263201
COMMENT: Processes, as viewed in Task Manager, that run by default in Microsoft
Windows 2000 and that can not be killed from taskmgr.exe.

Windows 2000 Professional Services
http://www.blkviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htm
COMMENT: Another very helpful site on services. Along with other information, it has
a table with "Display Name" (which equals services.msc "Name") and the corresponding
"Process Name" (which equals taskmgr.exe "Image Name").

Glossary of Windows 2000 Services
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/howitworks/management/w2kservices.asp
COMMENT: Microsoft's Alphabetical list with summaries for all. Some have general
information on how each service is related to the functioning of the operating system
and describe the major effects of disabling the service.

NOTES:

1. Before reconfiguring your System Services, I recommend that you open services.msc
[Menu bar] Action > Export List... and save this file so that you have a list of
the installation default settings.

2. Do not change the default Startup type of the Logical Disk Manager Administrative
Service Startup Type (Manual). For more information, see the following Microsoft
Knowledge Base Article:

KB307309 - The Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service Hangs While It Is Starting
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=307309

3. Do not change the default Startup type of the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service
(Automatic). Many services depend on it and if it fails to start (or hangs) problems
include Service Properties Sheets not displaying. For more information see the
following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article. KB259733 also describes how to use the
registry editor to configure the service to use the built-in system account.

Carrie,

That did the trick! Thanks, I really appreciate it! I
thought it was in there somewhere, it pays to have those
with knowledge to point you in the right direction.

Something to keep in mind... If you disable the RPCs, you
can't get back in to change it back except for the
registry.

Thanks again.

Cheers,

David
