Recently my kids computer was hit with spy ware and I
tried to get rid of it. I think I got rid of too much! I
can't remember how to clean my hard drive completely so I
can reinstall windows 2000. Do I reformat C? Will my CD
rom still work if I do?

Thanks for some help.

Try restarting your computer with the win2000 CD in the drive. It should
start into the setup program from the CD. At that point follow the
instructions and select to install complete. It will ask you which partition
to install to, and you can then select your C: partition. Then select the
option to format first.

If for some reason your computer will NOT boot from the CD, you will have to
go into your computer's BIOS / Setup (usually by hitting "DEL" when it is
starting up - there should be a message telling you which key to hit to
"enter setup"). In the setup menu, find the item for "boot sequence" and
then change it to boot first from the CD, then the hard drive. Save and
exit, and it should boot from CD next time.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.
