Start Windows Defender Service

After having my computer with Windows XP for several years, today I just
received the following error message when starting up my computer:

"Windows Defender

Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows
Defender Service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or
search Help and Support on how to start a service manually."

I have been unable to find how to start a service manually on the computer
and web page help and support areas, so wanted to see if I could get help
through this discussion group.

Thank you,

Old beta versions of Defender expire today. Make sure you have the latest
version.

Go to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Locate
Windows Defender, select Properties and ensure that the Start-Up Type
is Automatic. Right click on Windows and select Properties to change
to Automatic. once changed click on Apply and OK, exit and Restart
your computer. Check taking the same route to confirm Windows Defender
has started.

In Tools in Windows Defender you should also check that in Tools you
have enabled Real Time Protection.

If you have the Beta version installed you now need to uninstall usung
Add / Remove Programs. You can then download and install the non-beta
version.

It seems that we are not alone (judging by the Google searches!). I was
aware that it ran out on 31 December so I removed the old Windows
Defender and downloaded the new version. Everything went fine until I
tried to Run the program! I now get this message "Service "Windows
Defender Service" failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient
privileges to start system services."

Reading the Google searches on this subject, it would appear that I
would have to change the Administrator, rerun the program, wait for the
You do not have permission (or whatever) and rechange the
Administrator. It will then work but the catch is you have to do this
every time you reboot. Surely Microsoft must be aware of this problem
with reinstalling the new version. I have done searches on the
Microsoft "Help" (for want of a better word!) and nothing appeared.

Anyone have any ideas before I go completely mad!

When all else fails, delete Windows Defender and reinstall. It worked.
No error messages.

Log on in Safe Mode as the Administrator ( not your usual Logon ) and
this should enable to change all permissions for your own for day to
day use. Grant your self Special Permissions.

Explanation of Safe Mode
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_Mode

Most computers use the F8 key to access Safe Mode but there are some
variations.

Next have a look at the permissions shown in the Registry. Look at
Method 3 in the following KB Article:
You receive an "Administrators only" error message when you try to
visit the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316524/en-us

In the Article at Step 2 it says Windows\Current Version\Windows
Update. Read it substituting Windows Defender.
