I went into msconfig from the run function and unchecked
a couple of things that I prefer not to start up when I
turn on my computer, such as a very annoying save.exe, as
well as music match and itunes programs. But when I did
that and rebooted I get the following message: You have
used the system configuration utility to make changes to
the way windows starts. The system configuration utility
is currently in diagnostic mode.....etc.
I went ahead an undid the changes. Why is it so hard to
take a program out of the start up routine. Any help
would be appreciated!

That box will always appear after changes are made. Look at it carefully
and you will note a checkbox NOT to show it again. Click that box.

Greetings --

That's the way it should work. Remember, MSConfig is intended
solely as a troubleshooting tool, and not as a means of "permanently"
altering your startup applications. So, when you make changes in
MSConfig to test your suspicions, WinXP reminds you that you're still
in troubleshooting mode.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
