I tried to run Dxdiag on my start --> run thing, but it says that Dxdaig did
not exist. so i tried to install it trough Microsoft's dxwebsetup.exe, but
it said that directx was already installed and updated. I dont know what
happened. I went to msconfig because I recently undid some services, <--
maybe that is the problem. WHat services does Dxdiag run on? also anyone know
the solution to this probelm?
directx worked fine until about a week ago..

thanks

I have "dxdiag.exe" in

C:\WINDOWS\system32
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

and dxdiag.chm (the help file) in

C:\WINDOWS\Help

In several different operating systems, when you attempt to
execute a program, the operating system uses a "Path" variable,
which contains the known locations of your programs. Some installers
will add elements to the Path, so the packages they install can be
found. If you give a fully specified path for a program, like
ask the system to execute this, then the Path isn't quite as important.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dxdiag.exe

When I go to the System control panel, and look in the Environment
Variables, in the System section at the bottom, these are the
components of the "Path" variable. You can see that the very first
one, is also the location of "dxdiag.exe". Some of the software
I've installed, added path elements to the left of this string,
so my Path variable is longer than this. But this would be similar
to what it would be like, just after the system was installed.

%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem

If you don`t mind reinstalling programs , system restore to when it
was working .

If you went to Start, Run and entered:

dxdiag

did it really say it does not exist or did it say Windows cannot find
'dxdiag'?

Not finding and not existing are not the same thing.

It should be in c:\windows\system32 (at least) and since it is a
protected/monitored file if it ever gets deleted, it should be
automatically replaced by the copy in c:\windows\system32\dllcache if
your Windows File Protection is working, so it should never be
"missing".

If it does exist in c:\windows\system32 and runs from that folder but
does not work from Start, Run, you can fix that via your PATH variable
as mentioned - and probably should. You should not have to put the
whole path in the Start, Run line to get fundamental Windows programs
to work.

Why do you think directx is not working?

If you've already verified that the necessary files actually exist
in the proper folder on your hard drive, it may be that something has
happened to your path variable, so that the necessary files can not be
found.

It should look something like this:

%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem

To edit the Path, right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced >
Environmental Variables. In the System Variables windows, highlight
"Path" and click the <Edit> button.
