Start Menu doesn't retain my latest used programs after restart

Ross LaBarbera

I've got a new laptop which came with XP Pro installed. When I restart this
PC, the programs that I last used do not show up in the Start Menu. The
programs that show up are Microsofts defaults (i.e. Tour XP, Windows
Messenger, etc.). I remove these from the Most Recently Used list and the
Start Menu keeps a record of the programs that I use in that
session....until I restart. Then it loses that information. Seems like it
might not be able to write to the Register for that Key or something.

Haven't been able to solve this one....any ideas???

Thanks,
Ross

Hi Ross,

You selected the Itanium version. Select the one above it. And
yes it will work with SP2 installed.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

To display the My Recent Documents folder on the Start menu:
1. Right-click Start, and then click Properties. Or, if the Start menu
is already displayed, right-click an empty area of the Start menu,
and then click Properties.
2. Click Customize.
3. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Under Recent documents, click to select the List my most recently
opened documents check box, click OK, and then click OK. The next
time you click Start, the My Recent Documents command is displayed
on the Start menu.

Some programs cannot add items to the My Recent Documents folder.
In this case, the document that you recently used is not listed. If you want
to open a document that is not in the My Recent Documents list, click
Search on the Start menu to search for the item.

This is why I mentioned Tweakui. It gives you more control over which
programs show up in the Start menu.

R

Ross LaBarbera

Thanks Bert, but when I tried to download the TweakUI application, I got an
error about it not being a valid 32 bit application or something like that.
Is that because I have SP2 installed for XP?

Also, I have XP Pro installed on 3 other computers and I don't get the Start
Menu result I described below on any of the other computers. Any other
thoughts???

R

Ross LaBarbera

Thanks again Bert. I already had gone into the Customize section of the
Start Menu to see what my options are and they are all set to show the most
recently used (MRU)programs. My problem is not that the MRU programs don't
show up...they do. But after I restart my computer, I lose the MRU list and
the default MS apps are shown again, like Tour XP, MS Messenger, etc.

Somehow this version of XP is not writing to the Registry correctly or
something to save my MRU programs list between restarts.

I'll try the other version of TweakUI, but from you explaination, I doubt it
will solve the problem I'm having. I'll give it a shot though... thanks
again!!

Ross,

The second quadrant holds the Most Frequently Used programs (MFU) list. The first quadrant has the Pinned items. If the MFU list is reset to defaults at every boot, try clearing the Programs list via Start Menu properties. Restart Windows and open a application (Notepad.exe). See if that gets added to the list.

Hi Alex,

Installing the Itanium version of Tweakui on WinXP does produce
a "TweakUIPowertoySetup_ia64.exe is not a valid Win32 application"
error.

Ross,

You can set a registry audit for this key to know if a program or script is overwriting the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist

Here is where the MFU is stored. Follow the steps here and set a audit for this key:

Ramesh,
Thanks for the information. I have messed with this Customize button on the
Start Menu properties before. It doesn't change my result. When I clear the
Most Frequently Used (MFU) list, it does that correctly. It also adds the
new programs that I start to this list.....until I reboot. After reboot, the
default MS programs are listed. It is like the MFU list is not being written
in the Registry properly or something.

Even though it functions properly after the list has been cleared and puts
the programs that I have used on the MFU list in the Start Menu, after I
restart my computer, the MFU list is reset to the Windows XP default!
Instead of listing Word, Excel, QuickBooks, PowerPoint, etc. it lists Tour
Windows XP, Windows Messenger, etc.....

Has anyone seen this problem?? It isn't a huge deal, just very
annoying....and now I'm determined to uncover the answer...

Thanks,
Ross

Ramesh,
I've tried to post JPEG screen shot to my reply to provide clear information
of what I am seeing, but the news group apparently won't let me attach a
file to my post....so I'll try to explain what I've done and seen.

I set the Audit on the User Assist key. After I reboot, I get one failure
that appears to happen on shutdown. The failed Object Access occurs from the
"user" NT Authority\Network Service. The Object Server is SC Manager with
various other details about the activity. Under Accesses it says:
READ_CONTROL followed by "Connect to service controller" and "Lock service
database for exclusive access"

Could the privileges on my Network Services "user" be set incorrectly???

Thanks for your help.

Ross,

Are you sure you're viewing the correct entry?

Example: http://www.winxptutor.com/images/adt7.JPG

Look at the "Object Type", which should contain the registry path for which you've set the Audit.
