Keeping in mind that configuring your computer to logon a user account
automatically significantly reduces the system's security, here are two options.

1. Download and install TweakUI from Microsoft. TweakUI is
available here.

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Direct Download of TweakUI
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once the program is installed, go to Start -> All Programs ->
Powertoys for Windows XP -> TweakUI.
Click the + sign next to Logon in the left hand column.
Click on Autologon.
In the right hand pane, put a check mark in the box next to
"Logon automatically at system startup".
Enter the name of your user account in the User Name box.
Hit the Set Password button and enter your password twice.
Note: You should skip this step if your account has a blank
password.
Click OK to close TweakUI.
Restart your computer to see if you get the desired results.

2. Go to Start -> Run.
Copy and paste the following into the Open box:

control userpasswords2

Click OK.
In the "Users for this computer" box, click on the account you
want to have logged on automatically.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer".
Click OK.
In the box that pops up, make sure the account you clicked on
earlier is entered next to User Name.
Enter your password twice.
Note: You can leave the password box blank if the account does
not have a password.
Click OK.
Reboot to see if you get the desired results.

Following up on my earlier response, you might want to visit the Windows Update
site and check for updates before you try either of the suggestions I offered in
my earlier response. There's a possibility you may be offered a hotfix for .NET
Framework 1.1 which may fix the autologon issue.

Configuring your computer to logon your account automatically reduces the
security on your computer because it allows the casual passerby access to your
system. It's not that big an issue if it's a home computer and you're the only
one who will have access to the system. As for someone stealing your computer,
should that happen a Windows password won't be much of an obstacle to overcome.

On a side note, you might want to check what time zone you're clock is set to.
Your posts are showing up with a time stamp an hour in the future.

Thank you! I've been meaning to install Tweak UI for ages, and this gives me
a good reason to do it. One more question: You mentioned that logging on
automatically reduces the system's security. I assume you mean in case the
computer is stolen? I can't think of any other situation in which it would
be at risk at that level.

Actually, since you're posting to this newsgroup using Outlook Express, you can
look at the properties of the messages in this thread to investigate the time
problem.

FWIW, I'm in the Eastern time zone, you and db are both in the Central time
zone. Note the time of his posts and yours. Check the properties of your thank
you message to db and his reply. Note how yours show -0600 and his shows -0500.

I don't think the problem is with your ISP. I'm not sure it will work but I
think you need to check the daylight saving box, let the time move ahead an
hour, and then reset it to the correct time.

Thank you again! Re the timestamp, I live in the Midwest of the U.S. and
have the zone set as Central Time. The time appears to be correct unless I
check the box "Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings changes." If
I do that, the time moves an hour ahead, which it shouldn't do at this time
of year. Is this at all related to my recent installation of SP3?

I also wonder if the timestamp is a problem with my ISP, since a friend with
the same ISP is having timestamp problems. I just sent myself a test email.
According to Properties, I sent it at 3:47 p.m. (the correct time here) and
received it at 2:46 p.m. If I copied and pasted the details from Properties
into a post, would you be willing to tell what's wrong?

Thank you!

Bingo! That did it! I'll tell my friend too. My guess is that I had to
disable the automatic change to daylight savings time and set the time
manually because I was using SP1, which didn't work with the new daylight
savings time schedule. It's good to be doing it right again.

Thank you very much!

It would have if you had installed the update that was especially put
together to handle that problem <smile>

True. But that was at a time when I was afraid to install anything from
Microsoft, guessing that I'd screw up something and have no one
knowledgeable enough to fix it. (My computer guru friends had scattered to
other places.)
