Getting rid of -- To begin click on user name

N

Neil

There's been many posts on this subject with basically the same
remedy. I've done the following but the
to begin click on user name
keeps coming up.

I select the user name / account name (whatever) I set up when I
installed Windows -- it had Administrator and I made ours Neil and
Carol -- in trying the directions below, the user name I select is
Neil and Carol Administrator.

Your help appreciated.

Here's what I tried --

none of these worked 01/2008
from user group
Click Start, Run and type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2, and click Ok.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer" option, and click Ok. Once you uncheck the option "Users
must enter a user name" and click OK/Apply, Administrator account name
will be displayed in the text box. Type-in a different user name and
password in order to auto-login to that account.

NOTE: In Windows XP Home Edition, don't try to auto-login as
Administrator, as it does not allow logging in as Administrator from
Normal mode. http://windowsxp.mvps.org/autologon.htm

from microsoft
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.

Note When users try to display help information in the User Accounts
window in Windows XP Home Edition, the help information is not
displayed. Additionally, users receive the following error message:
Cannot find the Drive:\Windows\System32\users.hlp Help file. Check to
see that the file exists on your hard disk drive. If it does not
exist, you must reinstall it.
Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer" check box, and then click Apply.
In the Automatically Log On window, type the password in the Password
box, and then retype the password in the Confirm Password box.
Click OK to close the Automatically Log On window, and then click OK
to close the User Accounts window.

correction to my second paragraph --

I select the user name / account name (whatever) I set up when I
installed Windows -- it had Administrator and I made ours Neil and
Carol -- in trying the directions below, the user name I select is
Neil and Carol (in the Groups column it says Administrators).

Hi Neil,

It is pretty straight forward:

To correct:

1. Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2 and press ok.

2. On the Users tab, left click "your user name" then clear the Users Must
Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click
OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the "user name
and password" for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

Added note: (Alex MVP)

If you want to logon to one of the other users, hold down shift as the
system boots up.

Tip:

Add Control UserPasswords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

your computer.

Kelly, as you can see, your steps are the same as I already tried. I
followed your steps just to be sure I didn't miss anything, but it
still didn't work. Whether I turn off, restart or hibernate, I get the
"to begin click on user name" message. If you want to email your phone
number and a good time to call, I'll call you and you can take me
through the steps and get this solved. Thanks.

Look for "registry file"(in blue), or at the bottom, download the service pack for the
.net framework 1.1 which corrects that problem.
That is, if the asp.net account is what's causing this

http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/aspdot.php

I already have installed Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0
and Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 ervice Pack 1

What happens if I Remove them both? What do I need them for? Something
came up way back when that said I needed Framework for something to
work in an application or a website. Both sau Used Rarely, 3.0 last
used on 11/3/2008.

Thanks,
Neil

It's my understanding that certain programs require them & .NET Framework 3 doesn't
take the place of 1 or 2.
I was referring to the Service Pack for .NET Framework 1 that would, most likely fix
your problem, as well as making the application fully patched.

Did you try the link that I sent?
It explains why you're probably having to "Click User Name" & the .reg file will
eliminate that, without having to get the Service Pack for it. You should go ahead &
download the Service Pack, though, since these tend to address any vulnerabilities
that are found with the programs.

Also, I wouldn't rely on the status in Add/Remove programs, regarding the "rarely
used" or the file size too, as they're not very accurate.

You need them only *if* you run a program written with that particular
version of .net. Otherwise you don't.

If you want to remove them, you may. If you run a program that needs
one of them, that program will complain to you, and you'll need to
reinstall the needed .net framework if you want to allow the program
to run.

My personal view is that it's best to just keep all the .net
frameworks installed. They use very little disk space, and even if you
don't need one of them now, they will all be there if you need them
later.

When I go to User Accounts there is Neil and Carol Computer
Administrator and Guest Guest account is off. No asp.net or anything
else. I apologize if you have to repeat instructions -- what would you
recommend I try? Thanks.

Locate and download / install TweakUI (part of PowerTys for Xp.)

Then look under Logon section and uncheck all accounts that you do
not to show up on the Welcome screen.

Then, make sure your "standard" account, leave the password blank.

The asp.net account is a hidden account.
Either go to the site & click the "registry file", download & install the Service
Pack 1.1 or follow smlunatic's suggestion & download & install TweakUI.
