I Throw Thumbers

Hello:

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop with Windows XP Home Edition,
Version 2002, Service Pack 2.

In the Control Panel->User Accounts, there are 3 accounts listed under
"pick an account to change". They are:
George (Computer administrator, password protected)
Public (Limited account)
Guest (Guest account is off)
If I click on the 'Change the way users log on or off' button, both the
'Use the Welcome screen' and 'Use Fast User Switching' buttons are
checked.

If I go to Start->Run->"control userpasswords2", another window pops up
that's also called "User Accounts". In this window, there are 3 users
listed for this computer:
Administrator (group administrators)
Public (group Users)
George (group administrators)

There's also a checkbox here that reads "Users must enter a user name
and password to use this computer" controls auto login for XP. Right
now it is checked.

Some background:
Last week I downloaded some VPN software. When I ran the installer,
for whatever reason created a User on my machine called SmsPackage1.
The installation failed. I uninstalled the software and deleted the
user using Control Panel->User Accounts.

The problem I'm having is:
If I uncheck the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer", then reboot my computer, I get the following Logon Message:
"The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain
are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must
be typed using the correct case."
I can also see that XP tried to auto login with the user I deleted,
SmsPackage1.
Sometimes this failed autologin hangs up the computer. Sometimes I can
just click OK, or cancel, and get to my regular login screen.

I assume then that not all traces of the user SmsPackage1 have been
removed from my computer. How can I remove it from the login process?

Another question is, if there are multiple users, "Use the welcome
screen" is checked, and auto login is enabled, how does XP know which
user to login as? This might be answered if the previous question is
resolved.

Try setting autologin for a different user account, then turn it off. Here
is how to do this.

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To
Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name
and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its auto logon feature.

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords 2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)
