Hi.

I sure do hope somebody here knows how to fix this. Any help will be
sincerely appreciated.

A week or so ago, I noticed that the "My Documents" button was missing from
my Start Menu. I'd been doing some heavy cleaning on my machine after
finding that I'd gotten a bunch of malware files when I'd unthinkingly
downloading a little freebie program from Brothersoft. (BIG goof, I know,
but I was nodding off.)

Everything looks good now except for that missing My Documents button on the
Start Menu.

I have the Powertoy TweakUI, and I checked to see if that would return the
My Documents button, but no go. I've checked every Windows control panel
that I can find to see if there's an option to de-list My Documents; so far,
I've not found anything. (But--holy cow!--there are SCADS of Windows control
panels tucked away!)

I also tried using System Restore to get me back to a time when My Documents
was in place. I tried going back one week, and that didn't fix it. The use
of S.R. did, however, manage to make a big mess out of a lot of my
reorganized files. So I'm loathe to try going back another week using S.R.

The must be a line in the Registry for this, but I don't begin to know how
to find it. (I can make changes in the Registry, but only by following the
directions of somebody who knows TONS more than I do!)

Thank you for you time here, and I will very much appreciate any help.
(I've gotten some really great help here before.)

Try this registry tweak:

Line 55. Restore Recent Documents, My Documents

If you can find My Documents on your PC, just make a shortcut to it and drag
it to the correct button on the Start Menu.

Have you tried this?

Right-click the Start button, and click "Properties" on the menu that appears.
On the "Start Menu" tab, click the 'Customize' button.
In the Customize panel that appears, click the "Advanced" tab.
In the middle section, titled "Start menu items", scroll down to the section heading
named "My Documents".
Click to select the radio button for "Display as a link".
Click OK all the way out.

If "Display as a link" was already selected, select "Don't display this item", click
OK all the way out, then go back in and select "Display as a link", and click OK all
the way out.

You can find all the documents from the C drive. In C drive follow the
Program files path. Definitely you will get the documents....

Elmo/Joe, thanks. Kellys-korner-xp is a great site--lots of fun stuff
there. I didn't actually check Kelly's to see if he had a fix for my missing
button, thought, as I'd gotton the problem fixed earlier. But thanks for a
great link. Andy

OK, I'm glad you got it worked out. Thanks go to Kelly for her great
site! Doug Knox and others have very helpful sites too..

glee and ju.c and everybody,

THANKS for your help here.

I did try the suggestions about restoring the My Documents button to my
Start Menu by using the Advanced Properties dialog for the Start Menu. But
that did not work because My Documents was NOT listed there as button that I
could choose to show or not.

As for the suggestion that I add My Documents to my Start Menu the same way
I'd any other folder link--i.e., via shortcut dragged to the Start button--I
hadn't thought of that. And that could have worked OK. But getting back the
original My Documents button in the R-hand column had some advantages.

Well, as it turned out, a great moderators for TweakXP--a guy named
RichieUK--helped me fix this. He sent me a chunk of registry code to install
(basically, I think he was replacing all of the necessary parts). Then I
posted a copy of a section of the results. One value then needed to be
changed. And we were done. And, sure enough, there was the My Documents
button back in the Start Menu.

I thought I was really a lucky dog after RichieUK helped me do this. I
don't get to spend a lot of time on these sites, but I'd sure never seen
anybody work on a problem the way this guy helped me with mine.

The funny thing was that I can't even remember what prompted me to post to
TweakXP. I was dead-tired at the time. I can't even remember how I managed
to stumble across TweakXP. I'd posted the problem here earlier, since this
is where I usually get the best, most serious help when I'm stuck on
something.

ANYway, . . . thanks for the postings. And I'll remember the suggestions
for using shortcuts the different ways you guys suggested. (I keep learning
new ways to use shortcuts!)

Back later (always back for more),

Andy
