Start button, task bar, desktop icons all missing

I've looked thru these forums and don't see a dead on match for my
problem.

My computer boots, I get the XP screen, pick my logon, and get to a
desktop w/ wall paper. No start button, no task bar, or no desktop
icons show up. The mouse moves around, but right + left click do
nothing.

I can ctrl+alt+del and get into Task Manager. If I try and run a 'new
task' of explorer.exe, the task bar flashes for a split second, then it
goes away.

I can start mundane things like MSHearts and it runs. I can't start an
Internet Explorer window.

I've run AdAware scans and AVG virus scans successfully, found some
problems, cleaned them up, but still have the same problems listed
above. I've also done some stand alone virus scans for specific
problems and haven't found anything. Did the "sfc /scannow" ...
nothing.

I've found some hits on registry errors (like shell=explore.exe) but on
inspection of those values, my machine is OK.

Help!

Do other accounts on that machine work OK? If they do, you may want to try
giving yourself a new profile (rename old one under docs and settings).

Hi,
I have a similar problem but do not know how to connect to the internet
without the task bar etc.

Keep getting the error message "Runner file name (fspex.exe) lacks a '-'
(the app id separator).

Help please
