standby problem

I reinstalled XP and now it will not go into standby (it
used to). It complains about a bad driver for the
keyboard (the standard one) - it's XP's driver! How can
it be bad? I changed keyboards with no luck. When it goes
into standby, then give the failure message, the mouse
goes away. Fortunately, the keyboard remains active so
that it can be restarted.

Any ideas?
