I have recently clean-installed Windows XP Professional
and I cannot put the system into standby (the option is
not shown in control panel > power neither is it on the
shutdown dialog.

Previously I used Windows 2000 Professional and standby
worked fine.

How can this be fixed?

This is usually caused by an outdated driver. Make sure all the drivers are
updated on your video and sound card. If you have a zip drive or scanner
make sure those drivers have been updated as well. These drivers were
probably updated at one time but with the clean install you will have to
reinstall them again.
