"Standby" Option Suddenly Missing?

Up to yesterday, my Shutdown menu included a "Standby" option -
which seemed to put the PC in the minimal-power-consuming sleep
mode.

Now it's gone.

Can anybody shed some light?

Do you have the XP theme on?

Click START | SHUTDOWN to display the XP three button option. Now press the
SHIFT key. It should toggle between HIBERATE & STANDBY

Does "gone" mean the button is missing, the button is inactive
(unclickable), or something else is where you expect the Stand By
button to be?

What about the other buttons?

I had a customer that lost a video card and didn't have a proper video
driver - the power options didn't work and were grayed out until a
proper video driver was installed - check your video.

Not seen in the dropdown. I'm at work now, will flip a link to a
screen snap this evening.

You're a good man, PeteCresswell.

Screen shots will eliminate lots of guessing and questions!

Hi Pete,

Desktop or Laptop computer? (Windows XP ???edition SP?)

Did you check the "Shut Down" menu in Task Manager? (Alt+Ctrl+Delete)

Mine has these:
Stand By
Hibernate [grayed out]
Turn Off
Restart
Log off Richard
Switch User WinKey+L

Any changes to Power Options? Any changes to User accounts or passwords?
Any power failure while in stand by? Any hardware|software changes?

Since Stand By is "A state in which your computer consumes less power when
it is idle", is it possible that something like anti-virus that does things
during idle time has disabled the Stand By option?

(Got pets? :)

Desktop.

In the end, I just restored from a backup image.

Somewhere along the way, I read that it could be an issue with
Power Management - and whether-or-not hibernation was enabled.\

But, like I said - I wimped and restored.

Gotta love those disc/partition images!!!
