Standard Windows XP Boot Menu

Hello, when Googling Safe Mode for WXP, I was directed to an article on "Add
Safe Mode to the Standard Windows XP Boot Menu" at downloads.techrepublic.
Tech Republic is part of the Cnet group. When I got to the article, I was
prompted to register in order to view the article. I registered, but when I
got to the article, I was requested to download it. Tech Republic claims to
have 4 million registered members with a huge database of tech articles. I
didn't download the article, but came here to ask if anyone was familiar with
this group and if I downloaded the article, would I also download commercial
malware? Part of the registration was agreeing to receive tech news from
their partners. I don't mind getting mail, but I don't want them to download
any files that would monitor my doings for commercial gain. I'm probably
just a little paranoid, but I would rather be safe than sorry. Thanks,

I'd just avoid that type of 'knowledge' source. You can find better
information from sources that don't require registration, and most certainly
don't require downloading an article rather than just browsing. Anyway,
Safe Mode is already a choice in the Windows XP Boot Menu (accessed by F8)!
If you use it often enough to resent tapping F8 multiple time, that will be
the least of your problems. In other words, it is a solution looking for a
problem.

I've watched CNET and its predecessors struggle for a business model while
steadily becoming less useful. I'd much rather a paid reference
subscription that all the jockeying for email addresses, site hits, and ad
exposures.

To add safe mode to windows xp boot menu, open your boot.ini and duplicate the main
"Microsoft Windows XP Professional" line and add :
/safeboot:minimal
at the end. Save it.

Good Luck, Ayush.

Hello Sir, the article was also suppose to contain instructions about working
with files in the safe mode. Because they claimed to have many other WXP
articles, I was lured on. I think your advice is solid and I will certainly
follow it. Thank you very much for your time and care,

No. Your boot.ini should look something like this after doing that:

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home"
/noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home"
/noexecute=optin /fastdetect /safeboot:minimal

Good Luck, Ayush.
