Stabilizing 'View'

How does one 'lock' the type of display when files are shown; that is, get
the same View each time? Changing from Icons to List will 'stick' in some
applications but not in others. In particular, using Windows Explorer,
folders of Windows Office documents will always come up as icons (tiles)
until the View is changed, but next time the folder is opened the icons pop
up again. Is there a way to fix this permanently?
