Squelching Modem Volume?

Wayne Watson

Every time I install or upgrade a Win OS, invariably I reset the modem sound, so the modem is heard
when I dial out. It then takes me a few months to accidentally stumble onto the checkbox to turn it
off. I'm back to that stage after upgrading to W2000 from NT 4.0. I always seem to search the
following four places in Control Panel:

Control Panel/Phone and Modem Options/Modems tab/Properties.

You can either move the slider to disable modem sound, or go to
the Advanced tab and enter "M0" (no quotes, and the 0 is a zero,
not the letter O) into the 'Extra initialization commands' field.

Properties/Volume control. Been there. Done that. I'll try the M0. I'm very sure there's a checkbox
somewhere in the bowls of w2000 that turns off the modem's sound.

M0 made no difference. Maybe I have to reboot for it to take affect.

Nope. Either your modem doesn't recognize standard AT
commands or you have the wrong driver installed.
