Spybot S&D causes BSOD

I have seen many comments about Spybot causing BSOD but never
experienced it.

My friend has a Pentium-III, fairly New, Win XP home edition, 640 MEG
ram.
She repeatedly gets BSOD when running Spybot. Sometimes Norton Anti-
virus also gives her BSOD.

We've tried many fixes. We removed memory cards. Moved them around.
Replaced some. Removed video card and reseated. Replaced video card.

NONE of these attempted fixes helped. The chatter on the web seems to
lay it firmly at Spybot's feet. Can you give us a fix or suggestion?
I've spent many hours trying to fix her system but mine works fine
(Mine is a P-IV, 1 gig RAM)

What is the message in the BSOD? Also, open Control Panel, open
Administrative tools, open Even Viewer, look for errors that correspond to
when the system crashes as you describe, double click the error, the message
within may give a clue as to the source of the problem.

Check the manufacturer's websites of the devices installed on the machine
for the latest drivers and be sure the devices are supported in XP, that
includes external devices. If she has a scanner which was used in a
previous version of Windows and she's running the software bundle that came
with the scanner, that might be the source of the issue, try removing that
software if this applies.

Place the XP CD in the drive, when the Setup screen appears, select "Check
System Compatibility," the report it generates may give a clue as to the
source of the issue.

Just to add to this, I've used Spybot S&D on many, many computers and
never experienced a bsod. That doesn't mean it couldn't happen, but it
is unlikely. It is far more likely - especially considering that you
say NAV also causes problems - that your computer is infected with a
virus.
