"Spy" software code in the XP register

Is there an easy way to detect and remove "spy" software
(which reports internet browsing preferences to an
outside source) code in the XP register without buying a
third-party program? Or does Microsoft have settings
which block changes to the register from the outside?
 
There are freeware versions of AdAware and SpyBot Search and Destroy. No
need to buy anything, unless you feel the need.
