spreadsheets don't load automatically when .xls file ar double cli

One of 8 networked PCs does not load .xls files when they are double clicked
- Excel opens, but with a blank window.
If I then drag and drop the file onto the blank window it opens fine.
Opening files from the File, Open menu works fine too.
The .xls files are stored in a shared location on a different PC that were
not being accessed by anyone else at the time.
The other PCs all open these files normally.
The problem PC and the PC with the shared files are both running XP Pro and
Office 2000.(and Nortons Antivirus)
(.xls file types are set to Open with Microsoft Excel for Windows)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sorry for the delayed response, but I have only just been able to access the
machine in question.
I have done as you suggested and it works fine now.
