spooler problem

My brother HL-1440 printer stopped working due to a spooling error. I tried
to restart the Printer Spooler using Ctrl Panel..Admin...Services. It
appeared to work but then I received the error again.

That did not fix the problem so I used sc config spooler depends= RPCSS
after the prompts , I then typed

net stop spooler

net start spooler

That restarted the spooler but only for a moment . After that it went back
to reading the original spooling error.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cari - I deleted the printer driver and reinstalled the driver from the disk
that came with the printer. Same problem as before. I then deleted the
driver and installed the latest one from Canon Web site. Same problem.
Currently I am using the Canon ip5000 on my P4 with xppro svc pk 2 without
the spooler as a file I try to print with the spooler active for this
printer goes into the cueue and doesn't print. I can't delete the file from
the print queue and the computer locks up when I try to delete the print
job. Rebooting reinitializes the printer and it then prints the file in
the queue! Unlike some of the other spooler problems I've read on this NG,
I get no message about the spooler. My i960 printer worked fine with the
spooler on this computer. I do have auto updates from MS and feel that
something got screwed up from a recent update. I'm really surprised to see
the number of complaints about spooler problems with xp pro. So--- how do I
get back to using a spooler with this printer?

Is this XP Home and are you running something like Norton Antivirus or other
internet protection software?

XP Pro. Running PCcillin antivirus and Webroot spy sweeper. The last
installation of the driver was done with all programs shut down. I opened
the computer in the mode that included only necessary XP Pro processes,
installed the driver and printer, and then rebooted. Still same problem. I
also tried it installed to the USB port on the computer instead of the hub.
Same problem. When I was using my canon i960, installed on the same USB
cable to the same USB 2.0 powered hub, it worked just fine with the spooler.
I am planning to reinstall the i960 now that I've purchased a new printhead
for it and will see if it works with the spooler as it did before I
uninstalled it and replaced it with the ip5000.(just three weeks ago).
Canon tech support took me all through the fixes they know and concluded
that it was a problem with XP Pro - possibly a corrupted file. That doesn't
explain why the i960 and my hp5p laser work ok with the spooler. The laser
printer is installed via the parallel port (lpt1).
