Spelling and Grammar Checking

S

Sam

The generally accepted, proferred, official acronym for the Department of
Defense in the United States is "DoD," not "DOD." No matter how I try to
change the dictionary and autocorrect settings in Word 2007 (and earlier
versions) the DoD acronym is always flagged as either a spelling or a
grammatical error. I can eliminate the spelling error, but when I do so the
grammatical error is still detected and the grammatical rule that was
supposedly applied is completely irrelevant to the situation. This is very
frustrating.

(Please test your suggested solution before you respond. It may not be as
easy to fix as you might think.

Thanks!

I don't ordinarily have the grammar checker enabled, but I turned it on, and
here's a method that works for me:

1. Type DoD and select it.

2. Go to Review, Proofing, Set Language and check the box for "Do not check
spelling or grammar." Click OK.

3. With DoD still selected, go to Office Button | Word Options | Proofing
and click AutoCorrect Options. "DoD" should be in the "With" box.

4. Select the "Formatted text" radio button and then type "dod" in the
"Replace" box.

5. Click Add and then OK twice to exit all the dialogs.

From now on, when you type "dod," followed by a space or punctuation, you'll
get "DoD," and it won't be marked as incorrect.
