Spelling and grammar

Certain sections of my document that I cannot locate are marked, "Do not
check spelling and grammar." When I "select all" and uncheck the "Do not
check..." box in Language or Options or in the Reveal Formatting pane, the
box reverts to a check. (Actually, the box is filled with a square,
indicating that parts of the document are affected by this option, while
others are not....and this is the condition to which it reverts after I
uncheck it.)

I have gone through the document- about 60 pages- roughly page-by-page and
was able to uncheck this selection in most places. But others are not
working. It appears to be in tables and text that is in outline format. But
not exclusively. Again, the strangest part is that I cannot narrow it down
and eliminate it.

Is there another universal fix, besides selecting all and unchecking the box?

On an apparently related note, when I spell/grammar check the whole
document, I do not get any readability statistics, but when I check short
sections, I do.

It's possible that one of your styles has "Do not check..." as part of the
style. You can search for this formatting using Word's Find dialog. Click
More to expand the dialog, then click Format, select Language, and check the
box for "Do not check spelling or grammar." Leave the "Find what" box empty.

Thanks, Suzanne, that helps. There were a number of apparently random places
in the document that were marked "Do not check."

However, when I "select all" now and check Language, Options or the
Formatting Pane to ensure that the entire document has the "Do not check"
option unchecked, the box is still filled in with a square (not a checkmark).


In the Find dialog, I searched separately, using the "Find in" feature,
among the entire doc, the header/footer, and the footnotes. The
header/footer search reveals that the page number field in the footers is
marked "Do not check..." And I can't seem to replace or manually uncheck the
feature here.

I guess that's okay- so long as I know that's the only anomaly, I don't
care. Do you think the rest of the doc is now formatted as I want it, given
that the Find dialog doesn't turn it up elsewhere?

The square indicates that formatting is mixed. You can click it twice, first
to check it and then to clear it, and that should take care of the problem.
If the problem recurs, then, as I said before, the likelihood is that there
is some style so formatted or that you are pasting in text so formatted.
Fields in general are usually formatted that way, too, I imagine, so it
doesn't surprise me that the page number is.

I get the same result: stats for parts of a document, but not the whole. And
that only if I click "no" when asked if I want to check the rest of the doc.
