Spell Check English

Denis Wray

Why does this not say American and why is English not available. 70% of words
highlighted have the correct spelling and mail simply wants to use the
American corruptions. In virtually every other Microsoft product we have both
English (American) and English (True or UK as normally quoted). Why not in
this product after all Americans only make up some 4 or 5% of the world
population?

There is a hack to use the UK English, if you use the newer Windows Live
Mail.....

open spell.ini (in %programfiles%/Windows Live/Mail/Proof/prf0009/2)
and change lang=1033 to lang=2057

Don't be so provincial! "English" is a group name that has various other
spelling subgroups such as Canadian and Australian, as well as US and UK.
Do you suppose the fact that Microsoft headquarters is in the US makes it
a priority?

As Robert already informed you, Windows Live Mail has hacks available
for the various English subgroups. In addition, someone recently found a way
to use any language Office 97-2003 spelling dictionaries for that program.

I respect you for the assistance you give to people in these groups, but
your remarks on this occasion are bloody stupid - to use an Australianism.

What many, including myself, cannot understand is why, for years, in
Outlook Express and the Office suites it has always been possible to have
your local "brand" of English as the dictionary, but not in Windows Mail or
Windows Live Mail. Yes, there is a hack available in Live Mail, but only a
tiny percentage of users would be aware. I'm certainly unaware of the way to
use Office you mention.

Our point of view is not provincialism as you say, but really a statement of
fact.

Bill, all the regulars (in W.L.M.D, at least) make stupid remarks on
occasion, but they are not usually malicious. WLMail is a brand new app,
released just four months ago. For the most part, it works well, but there
are rough edges that need smoothing off - and we fully expect that many of
them will be in the first update. That the Language boys - and Accessibility
and HTML and probably others - weren't quite ready to go Gold when the main
team was is an MS problem that we users have to live with. In the meantime,
take advantage of the workarounds that users have unearthed to make using
these apps even more pleasurable. I can't speak for WM (I'm still waiting
for Vista to settle down), but there are solutions available for most users
looking for effective spell checking in WLMail.

It's not really relevant, but I can't resist quoting "Never ascribe to
malice that which can reasonably be explained by incompetence."

I doubt that any of us could tell you why the dictionaries are so few. We
don't work for MS.
I personally don't expect to see any further updates to Windows Mail, since
WLM is it's heir apparent.

Bill, I am sorry you took offense to my remarks, but I stand by
the gist of it.

We responders are not here to make apologies for apparent omissions
by Microsoft. We offer workarounds where available. It is a waste of
time to lament about what might have been. Microsoft is under no
obligation to make Office dictionaries as easily available for use in
Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail as it was with OE. Sometimes
a business makes a strategic retrenchment (which sounds better than
saying 'stupid omission'). ;-)

There was at least one poster in the WLM newsgroup who claims
he can switch almost instantaneously between Spanish and English
spell checking. Since I have no need for such legerdemain, I didn't
save the details of how to do it. Post your request in that newsgroup
if you need that feature.

Heh, I have English, French and German working properly, but Spanish won't
reliably spell check E-Mails. Spanish is the one that I wish would work, of
course.

Under which program, Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail? Your message
was crossposted to the newsgroups for both programs.

WLM, didn't see the cross post. Right now, I'm typing with Spanish (Spain,
International Sort) enabled for spell check as I type and nothing is
underlined. If I switch the input language to either English, French or
German the results are as expected. Spanish works "sometimes" but there is
no way to predict whether it will or not.

Saludos cordiales,

Earle

Earle, I use the Mexican version of Spanish and it works perfectly for me
all the time. Maybe try that.

I only have the option to install "Spanish (Spain: Traditional Sort)" in
Windows Live Mail, Version 2008 (Build 12.0.1606). I installed "Spanish
(Mexico)" in the Language Bar and I will see how it goes. So far, it
appears to have the same problem. It only starts spell checking after I
change the input language a few times or save and reopen the mail message.
I sure wish it could use the Office 2007 spell and grammar checker, which
"molan mogollón".

By the way, Denis Wray, unless you are still speaking Elizabethan English,
you are just as "corrupt" as we Americans.)

Thanks.

Earle
