Speech/Voice Recognition in Office 2003 (XP o/s)

Hi there,
I have successfully installed voice recognition, verified microphone etc..
did all the 'training' a few times over but I still have a problem .... I
have the voice tool bar with all the trimings, and when i select microphone
(on) and go into command mode ... all is beautiful, my commands are
recognised. But, when trying to 'type' into the Word or Excel file nothing
happens, all I get is the message box saying 'what was that?".
Why isnt it acknowledging my text input (what I want to dictate, even when I
have selected 'Dictate')? Microsoft site wasn't much help I'm afraid. I even
tried adding documents etc to the Tools and 'Learn from Document' (whatever
that is supposed to do...???)
Any suggestions, gratefully received.

One suggestion is to click on tools-options and check if the "disable
dictation while typing" is enabled. Its a bit of a long shot but maybe the
sound of keyboard bashing is being picked up and interfering with typing?

Thanks DM for responding so quickly. I have tried it with & without the
'disable dictation while typing". I am in quiet surrounding and not using the
keyboard whilst dictating.
I cant dictate or even use Speech commands in Note pad, Powerpoint, Outlook,
Info Path.
The MS engine I am using is Microsoft English (US) v6.1 Recognizer.
I read on MS Speech site http://www.microsoft.com/speech/?gssnb=1 about
Microsoft Speech Application Software Development Kit (SASDK) Version 1.0 and

Speech SDK 5.1 for Windows® applications from
http://www.microsoft.com/speech/download/sdk51/ which has successfully
confused me. Can I use these or one of these on my XP stand-alone PC? or do I
have to have the Server 2003 software installed. It confuses me with all the
'Beta' downloads etc.
What would you suggest, has anybody tried these. I mean I would dearly love
to be able to 'Voice command' Windows in general, like using the START and
select the program etc I want... which I can't do right now.

Sorry to lay it on so thick, but I wanted to make sure I had all bases
covered.

The Butt ...
