Speech Recognition in Word 2003 on Vista

Q

QuantumGood

I have used Microsoft Office's built-in speech recognition successfully with
Word 2003 on XP. Now I am trying to use Vista's speech recognition with Word
2003.

The training program recognizes voice properly, as evidenced by saying a
training phrase improperly: it won't let you advance to the next screen until
you say it properly. So it is hearing and understanding voice.

But no words EVER appear in the Word document. Not the wrong words, NO words.

When turning on speech recognition with Word open one of two things happen,
either:
1. A variety of commands seem to happen—sidebars open, dialog boxes pop up,
etc.
2. Speech recognition dialog shows "What was that?"

It is clearly hearing and responding. Set mic volume several times, and db
meter in speech recognition shows normal response. It's as if it's in what in
Office used to be called "command mode" where it only listens for commands,
not words.

I mention Office's command mode, but Vista does not seem to have a "command
mode," although it is behaving as if everything is either a command or
unclear, and never a word. Note that choosing Tools>Speech in Word has no
effect. No checkbox appears, clicking the speech option and speaking, then
clicking again and speaking, etc. has no effect.

If you had bothered to read Mark's first reply, you would have
noticed that Dragon was mentioned as an alternative. Yes, Dragon
is good stuff. It plays better with Windows than Windows Speech
Recognition does. Naturally speaking works much better than WSR if
you push the envelope and use it for command and control of your
computer like I do.

Yes that is sad IMO, but it is a different subject suited for the

FWIW.
Although "remuneration" looks as if it might mean "repayment" it
usually means simply "payment." In speech it is often confused
with "renumeration," which would mean re-counting (counting
again).

I made the mistake of outliving my finances in later life, heck
even had to drop up my memberships in IEEE, ACM, AAAI recently
because I could not afford the yearly premiums.

To give you an idea of how poor I am, I could barely afford to
buy my recent MacBook Pro at $5,000 base price, with its 512 GB
solid-state internal drive & 8 gigs of ram.

Now that's poor !!!

Not unless you had to borrow the money. In my main system is a 32
GB SSD main drive with a backup 150 GB Raptor, and I am happy with
the setup.

Has your 32 GB SSD shown any signs of deterioration yet?

No. Solid-state drives have a mean time between failure (MTBF) of
over 1 million hours. Therefore, either the concern about a
limited number of write operations is unfounded, or the makers are
lying about the MTBF. It cannot be both. You cannot have have an
SSD drive with a 1.5 million hour MTBF and also have to worry
about a limited number of write operations.

WSR (Windows Speech Recognition) for Vista and Window 7 has a nice
feature called, "Show Numbers." This allows someone with limited
mobility to use a mouse the ability to speech enable any button, menu
or drop down list on the screen.

Let's see, we have John Doe (really the criminal Mark Bender) and on
the Speech Computing forum we have Xanadu, also the criminal Mark
Bender from San Antonio, TX. I use my real name. I don't post
references to other posters that cannot be verified, called 2nd hand
testimony. What has been verified is you have publicly said, "Your
mother is the whore who squeezed you out."

What is my crime according to alias Mark Bender/Xanadu but really
criminal Mark Bender Internet Cop Wannabe:
"Helping people and including links to your commercial web site in

commercial web site in the body of your post is not okay IMO. "

Get real Mark Bender, you are not an Internet Policeman, you have been
discovered as having been arrested twice and been sued into poverty.
You are a pathetic human being who owns no property, not even an
automobile. Your whole day is taken up hidden behind a computer with
an antiquated XP operating system, roller blading down by the river
walk and feeding stray cats (very commendable in my book).

The postings made my Marty Markoe have been helping others for 12
years on the Internet. I was invited to Redmond and gave the Speech
Workgroup the value of my experience in 2006 prior to the release of
WSR, Windows Speech Recognition. In July I will be receiving an award
for my speech recognition contributions that few people receive (don't
worry John Doe/Mark Bender, you'll be the first to hear about it). In
addition, when the Dragon NaturallySpeaking Dealer Seminar was
organized in June of 2009, I was chosen to give the microphone
presentation to over 40 top dealers in the US.

What have you Mark Bender aka John Doe aka Xanadu contributed to
Speech Recognition????

Sincerely,

Marty [Martin Markoe], how come whenever someone disagrees with

Man [Marty Martin Markoe] you really are full of yourself! Just

email after email after email from you telling me that you won't
answer my question and trying to justify it. Lets cut the crap.
You won't answer my question. I won't buy from you. So now go

You [Marty Martin Markoe] MAY have been inside but I HAVE been and

a. Marty Markoe, real name, never been arrested, accused by John Doe

b. John Doe aka Xanadu but really Mark Bender a room renter with no

Most of your quotes have no basis in reality and are just plain
hearsay. When I'd had enough of your libel and slander (not to mention
calling my mother a whore) I had you investigated with the full
intention of spending whatever it took to stop your insanity. The
investigation found you are a nobody with no car, renting a room in a
rundown crack infested neighborhood. My lawyer told me to forget it.
Guess we will just have to put up with your nonsense here. Of course
you could try posting your nonsense on Speech Computing. Skip is just
waiting to pull the plug on you there.

One problem I have with the Apple 512 GB drive is that I can no
longer get adequate compression of my 100 GB backup file of my
Windows-7 partition. It only compresses down to 20 GB. ...and I
know the exact reason why. It is my fear of "using up" the
limited write cycles of the SSD by clearing the free space in
the darn Windows-7 partition.

Compressing data usually clears the free space on the way to the
target media. Currently, I use a free program called Macrium
Reflect. Works great for making copies of my SSD main drive to my
secondary HDD drive, better than any of the many disk manager
programs I have paid for.
