Speakres self muting

Does anyone what could be causing my speakers to "self"
mute. It doesn't happen all the time but very frequently
my speakers mute themself. The little check in the mute
box comes in and out with out any input from myself.
Sometimes in just stays in and I have to uncheck it
myself. I am computer literate but I have never seen a
check box check itself. Very annoying. Any ideas?

Thanks for the help but trouble shooter did not solve the
problem... any other ideas.
