Mute function error

System volume, master volume, ALL volume is becomes automatically muted. when
i uncheck the mute button in variety of locations, even sound settings, it
returns to being muted in about 3 seconds. Sometimes starts up with sound and
then goes mute, other times it just stays mute right from the start.

any help thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
can't seem to update my sound card driver either...

I believe that first, I would try uninstalling the sound card, turn the
computer off and PHYSICALLY remove the card from its slot, then in a few secs
put it back and make sure all the pins are properly seated. Then I would boot
Windows up and reinstall the sound card and see where I stood then...
