Sound IN, not going in...

I have just returned from a House Call to a computer club member's home.
Windows XP, SP3 with all later updates.

He is trying to use Dragon Naturally Speaking Ver. 10. No matter what we
did, the microphone would be muted. We could uncheck the mute and could
start Configuring the mircophone and we couldn't get past the second window
and we would see the mute boxes be checked.

Any thoughts?

That appears normal behaviour, It's supposed to be muted by default in
the main mixer in Windows, and when you use a program that can use a
mic, it's supposed to be automatically un-muted while using the
program.
If the program that is supposed to un-mute it automatically is poorly
written or if it isn't installed properly, that may not work properly.
And obviously you must have your sound drivers installed properly.
maybe try turning the volume down to a minimum and seeing if it still
mutes it, also see if opening something like windows video conference
unmutes it.

Flamer.
