speaker selection

I have an older model compaq pc that has a speaker jack as well as a
headphone jack, both on the back of the tower. When I plug in the
headphones, the speakers cut out. Is there any way i can switch between them
without having to unplug the headphones? It's a pain to get at the jacks
because of the way that I have my pc setup, but I'm sure i should be able to
switch them without unpluggin Any help would be appreciated. Also I am
using windows xp pro.

Headphone jacks will normally do that, they are designed for Private listening.
You may plug the Headphones into the Speaker jack as well and in order to
have both at the same time you need only to invest in a STEREO 1/8" mini male
to 1/8" Female Y-adapter. Plug the adapter in and then plug the headphones
and speakers into the Y. Before buying check your speaker to see if there is
a Headphone jack on it. Some do.
