SPA Login/Password/Domain Prompt

I'm using Outlook 2K3 with multiple accounts, several of which are SPA
accounts on a Win 2K3 simple POP server. All of these accounts share
identical settings (save the logins), but every time I start Outlook, I am
always prompted to enter my password for one of them. Then Outlook proceeds
to download my mail for that account only. It claims to successfully check
my mail on the other accounts (at least, it doesn't report any errors), but
it clearly doesn't get the mail (there are messages sitting in the mailbox
on the server). If I restart Outlook and get prompted for another account
(usually I can get this by disabling the one I was previously prompted for
in the default send/receive group), then only that account works. I tried
Outlook Express and I get the exact same problem. I also tried setting my
username to both "username" and "username@domain", with no difference. This
behavior ceases when I switch back to plaintext, but that's really not an
option. The exact prompt I'm getting is titled "Logon - [server name]" and
asks for my username, password, and domain. I have verified on the client
machine that the Protected Storage service is running. I checked the
server's Security event log and I saw a whole bunch of "Success Audit"s but
I'm not sure what I'm looking for (I'm quite new to Windows Server). Anyway
I would greatly appreciate any pointers. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

This is by design (in Outlook Express/Outlook). Outlook caches the logon
credentials. If you then logon to the same server, but as another user, it
tries the cached credentials first. Since they are working on that server
(the username and password match), it will log you on, no matter what user
you really wanted to log on as.

I have not tried it, but it might work as a work around. If you use the IP
on one account, and the dns name for another account, it might *think* they
are different servers, and therefore not do this. I am however not sure if
this will work.

Thanks for your reply. I actually just tried this, except I was using
multiple DNS names instead of the IP address. It does in fact prompt you
once for each, and it's able to get the mail for both accounts. However,
that still doesn't get rid of these prompts, and you have to specify a
different server for each account. Is there any work-around for this?

Why you are asked is most likely because you have not typed the correct
username. If you are using SPA, it should be "user", and not
(e-mail address removed).

Please make sure that this is configured correctly for the settings for your
account(s). Then restart Outlook, and you might need to restart the client
machine as well (i hate Outlook's caching behavior).

I am not aware of any other work around that will work. You could of course
use Email Aliasing, which would make it possible to have all emails in one
mailbox. You can find more information about Email Aliasing here:

Yes, the username is different for plaintext and SPA logins. Thanks for
the configuration link. But the problem is that even for just one
account, I am prompted for this every time the client (or machine)
restarts.
