SP4

After I installed Windows 2000 SP4 internet speed went down significantly
(about 50%) compared to an XP machine on the same router/IP address (as
evidenced by internet speedtest). Has anyone seen this problem and knows how
to fix it?

You probably have some process running that is consuming all of the
resources. Task Manager|Processes and see what process is consuming the
mem/cpu

Thanks for your reply. I checked CPU usage. It is at about 5% max. Most
resources are used by "System Idle Processes". So I am not sure if that is
it.

I did some web surfing earlier and found a few entries about SP4 and its
potential impact on network speed. A few people talked about certain
registry settings such as this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic
es\Tcpip\Parameters\Tcp1323Opts

In this context, they referred back to item Q224829 (or KB224829) in the
Knowledge Base. I looked at it, but the instructions were not very
specific and I did not want to mess with the registry without knowing if this
is really the problem.

Here's the rest of them. normally there's no need to change them. Your
problem most likely lies elsewhere. SP4 has been around since June 26, 2003

http://www.speedguide.net/files/sguide_tweak_2k.zip

sguide_tweak_2k.zip
Description: Generic patch for Windows XP and Windows 2000 (all
versions). This patch will optimize your TCP/IP Registry settings for
high speed Internet connections. To install, extract the .inf file
first, then double-click (or right-click on filename and choose install
from the pull-down menu) and reboot for changes to take effect.
OS: Windows 2K/XP/2k3 | version: 1.0 | date: 12/18/01 | filesize: 1 KB

Should it be a perfect world and SP4 is supposed to do it for you?
Dunno, you decide......I've witnessed many scenarious where it doesn't,
applied the patch & tweked the reg to perfection.

Merge to the reg and it's done...........sguide_default_2k.zip will turn
it back if you think you're taking a risk........

Before you hit the reg go to this site, test your speeds....

http://speedtest.chartermi.net/
(Hopefully you have java installed) or any speed site will do, I prefer
this one.

Make note.....Apply the patch, reboot, run the speed tests again....Same
results than as Dave mentioned the problem lies elsewhere.

ByTor,

Thanks a lot! It works like a charm. Almost doubled the speedtest result.
You are a genious!

Thanks for your help. I just reimaged, using an old W2K CD from 1999. I
guess by using the roll-up SP4 the network settings turned out be
"sub-optimal".

Glad to hear it's sorted.
