Sp4 won't install because tftp running.

B

bob Sterrett

What starts this?? I shut down most services. It is not in the process
list. The file can not be deleted or renamed.

I successful installed sp4 on windows server 2k. The advanced server is
running sqlserver, msmq, biztalk, exchange and is a domain controller. But,
as I say, I shut almost everything down and sp4 still complains.

Dear Bob,

Thank you for your post.

I understand that Windows 2000 SP4 could not be installed because "tftp"
was running. Based on my research, the tftp is trivial file transfer
protocol (TFTP) under the implementation of TCP/IP. Both FTP and TFTP can
be used for transferring files across the Internet. A TFTP server is
included in Windows 2000 as part of the RIS Server component.

Please temporarily stop the RIS server to test this issue again.

Does it work now? If this issue continues, please let me know the exact
error messages and attach the SVCPACK.LOG installation log file.

I'm not running RIS. tftp is used by a variety of processes - one of which
is causing me some trouble.

Dear Bob,

Thank you for your update.

From the installation log file, it seems that the system cannot get access
to the "tftp.exe" file. Based on my research, this problem may occur when
you do not have enough permission on the "TFTP.EXE" file. Please perform
the following steps to check again:

1. Verify the permissions on the "TFTP.EXE" file. System and Administrator
should have "Full Control". You can also set "Everyone" to "Full Control"
temporarily until Windows 2000 SP-4 is installed successfully. Meanwhile,
please check whether "Everyone" is denied the access.
2. Verify the permissions on TFTP.DLL (also located in System32 directory)
and change if necessary.
3. Verified permissions on all "upper-level" Registry branches (HKCR, HKCU,
HKLM, HKU, HKCC).
4. Verified permissions on all relevant directories (root of C:, WINNT,
SYSTEM32, SERVICEPACKFILES).

After you verify the permission, please try to install Windows 2000 SP-4
again. If you have Antivirus applications are running, please temporarily
disable it before you try to install the update.

If this issue continues, you can boot the system into a Clean Boot
environment if it is convenient for you to test again.

I appreciate your efforts and look forward to hear from you.

Have a nice day!

Well, after chasing permissions, I did get SP4 installed.
The mod date on tftp was the date I originally tried to install sp4.
by the way, there is no tftp.dll

Thanks
