I cannot install the SP4 pack. On restarting I get blue
screen error messages- usually c0000221 Unknown hard error
about ntdll.dll, but sometimes Inaccessible Boot Device.
On restarting in safe mode I can uninstall SP4 and it is
OK, but I am concerned nonetheless. I have upgraded the
drivers on all the hardware I can think of- I have a Zoom
PCI DSL modem and used the latest setup .exe, the hard
drives are a WD and an IBM and both say they do not need
separate drivers. I have disabled virus checking software
prior to installing the service pack, as well as doing
full virus scans, fixing the boot record and MBR from the
Win2000 CD and running the system file checker.
What now?

Sounds like it can't copy some files although that would generally cause
the setup to fail when it is copying files before the reboot. I would do
a couple of things.

First check permissions in your Windows, System32 and Drivers
directories. Make certain that system and administrator have full access
to all files.

Also run sfc /scannow to get all core files back to known versions.

Permissions were set OK. I ran sfc /scannow and
reinstalled the patch- same result. However I can now
start up using the Emergency Repair floppy- which I
couldn't do before with SP4 installed.

With SP4 installed the computer now sometimes and
sometimes does not boot up OK. Sometimes checking 'Enable
boot logging' helps it start OK, sometimes it doesn't.
Similarly, sometimes it will start with the boot disk and
sometimes it won't. Help!
