SP4 on Standard PC

Sorry for crossposting, I am not sure which newsgroup is good for my
problem.

I have a pretty good Pentium III machine running Windows 2000 Professional.
In order to install Visual Studio 2005, I need to upgrade it to SP4. After
installing the service pack, the machine produces a blue screen on reboot
with the error 0x0000001e and exception KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED.
The error also mentions hal.dll.

I am able to boot in safe mode with networking, uninstall SP4 and then boot
normally with just SP3.

The computer driver is Standard PC. The hal.dll version with SP3 is
5.00.2195.4864. SP4
installs hal.dll version 5.00.2195.6655. Would replacing the 6655 with 4864
help? I am scared to try.

In case if I can't get the SP4 installed, is there a way to make Visual
Studio 2005 happy without installing the whole SP4?

With the numerous cross-posts you use you will have to check
each and every newsgroup individually in order to be sure to
catch even those replies that might be in a single newsgroup only . . .

I would run msconfig.exe (http://www.svrops.com/svrops/dwnldoth.htm)
while in Safe Mode and use it to selectively disable the various tasks
under the Startup tab until you find the culprit.

So what you suggest? Post to single newsgroup and wait forever? In this
newsgroup more than half messages are never answered...

Personally I consider two or perhaps three newsgourps
appropriate and everything above excessive. But this is
my own opinion - please feel free to disagree!

Thank you for the advice.

msconfig.exe didn't help much. With everything disable I still get the blue
screen on startup. Nevertheless I was able to localize the problem by
disabling some device drivers. I finally found that the culprit is my
FlyVideo '98 video capture card. If I disable it, the machine starts
normally. With the card enabled, I can't start in the Safe Mode with VGA.
This means there is a conflict between the video card and the display
driver. Now I am wondering what changed between SP3 and SP4 that caused the
conflict.
