SP4 - Clean Install the Best?

V

Vlod

I have recently install 6 new servers with Windows 2000. I received new
CD's from Microsoft that already had SP4 on them. I have been hearing that
SP4 has problems, mainly it has a tendency to slow down the machines its
placed on. So far the servers that I am using are lighting fast and have
experienced no problems.

Now, do the problems normally materialize more often with an SP upgrade (sp3
to sp4) or with clean installs. I have heard that clean installs normally
do not experience as many problems as upgrades do. Can anyone help clarify
this for me?

Clean installs are usually the best unless you know Outlook 98 is going to
be installed on the box. (In this case go with a clean install of Windows
2000 (SP3). Immediately patch MS JavaVM and reboot. At this point you can
jump to SP4 and install Outlook 98.) It appears that Outlook 98 installs a
very old version of MS JavaVM. :/

FWIW, I've upgraded about applied SP4 to roughly 2000 workstations w/out any
issues. (Of course I've just jinxed myself.)

I think it's more with mixing hotpatches with unfriendly indians..
they have a tendency to circle the Wagon Train, if you know what I mean.
Try doing the upgrades on test designated, machine and make an ERD and backup
before you start.
Some of the guys in can tell you about particular patches, like I can'r find right
now

thanks,
