SP4 & Disk Defragmenter - Gone !?

M

Mark

After installing SP4, the Administrator User ID no longer
sees "Disk Defragmenter" under System Tools. The only
choices under System Tools are "Disk Cleanup" "Getting
Started" and "Scheduled Tasks"
How can I analyze and defrag my hard drive? Where has the
option gone?

Do a search in your Documents and Settings to see where the shortcut for
Disk Degramenter is . . . it is very possible that it somehow got moved from
the All Users start menu.

The easy solution would be to make a new short cut and put it in the All
Users start menu.
It's WINNT\System32\dfrg.msc

P.S. - You could always go to my computer and right click on the drive, and
choose properties, tools, defragment now.

Chuck,
Thanks for your replies. Right-clicking on the C drive in
My Computer didn't have a choice for defragmenting and the
search also didn't find it, but your shortcut matched the
defragment program.
Did you every hear of the system creating a new user file
folder structure even though the user has logged in many
time before?
When I logged in yesterday, I was presented with a first
time user screen (Intro to Windows 2000, default icons,
etc.) When I looked in the folder structure, the system
had created a folder called mark.dell2000PC (dell2000PC is
the full computer name) with subfolders "My Documents"
etc. underneath.
When I logged in as the Administrator and deleted those
folders and emptied the Recycle Bin, they came back the
next time I logged in.
This has happened in the past to all the users on my home
PC, except the Admin accounts. It's a real pain, because
Outlook and all documents are not known to these "new"
users.
No new users are created in Control Panel. The *only*
thing that happens is the system thinks a user is loggin
on for the first time and creates a folder structure for
him or her.
This is a standalone PC with W2K and SP4. It's happened
both before and now after SP4 was installed.
Thanks in advance.

Mark,

I've not really experienced that, but I know that when I updated my notebook
PC with the .NET Framework that in addition to All Users and Default User,
it made All Users.WINNT and Default User.WINNT

I haven't bothered with this update on my desktop, so I'm quite sure that
update did this, because these folders do not appear on my desktop . . .
I'll admit to being pretty clueless when it comes to the .NET Framework
"thing" . . .

The main web page is:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/

P.S. - When I said to right click on your hard drive in My Computer, did you
choose PROPERTIES, and then TOOLS? Disk Defragmenter should be there . . .

Chuck,
Defragment appeared just where you said it would once I
click on Properties then the Tools tab. Sorry about the
confusion.
I appreciate the information about .NET Framework, which
sounds like it's doing something similar to what is
happening with my PC. However, I don't have .NET Framework
and I'm not quite sure what .NET Framework does :( !!

If you ran Windows Update and chose the "Recommended Update" Microsoft .NET
Framework version 1.1 then you have it . . .

Run Windows Update again to see if it got installed . . . look under the
Recommended Updates.

Chuck,
Thank you. I did look at the website for .NET Framework
briefly.

It looks like a development tool to allow integration of
different programs and environments. It seems to me if a
program I was running required .NET Framework, it would
tell me up front or intstall the supporting files on its
own. Why I need to have installed that I'm not sure. Of
course, Microsoft can say that it WAS optional, but the
format the Updater uses is not very helpful in determining
what should be installed. The website I wandered into has
the fixes lists as Critical, Moderate, etc.

At any rate, I will try to dig through the .NET site to
learn more about attaching the computer name to each user.
My problem started before the recent update, but maybe I
can learn something to point me in the right direction.

Poking around on the Microsoft site, I found a page
telling how to find which version you are running and it
mentioned a GREAT program, dxdiag, which you can invoke
from the Start Run window. LOTS of information in a nicely
displayed format. Have you tried it?
