How To Find Disk Defragmenter and Scandisk

D

DaffyD®

I've got as Windows 2K SP4 computer that I got from work and I just noticed
that when looking at System Tools I don't see Scandisk or Disk Defragmenter.
In fact there isn't much there. I already use Diskeeper as my defragmenting
program which seems to have supplanted the Windows version. I wanted to
try the Windows tool as well and it isn't there. I tried to add them using
the Add Windows Components in Control Panel but I didn't see them as an
option so I don't think I can get them off my setup CD.

How can I regain access to these utilities?

IIRC diskeeper basically uses the built-in tools so that's why you no longer
see it. From My Computer select the drive, then File|Properties|Tools|Check
Now but generally better to do from the recovery console.

Diskeeper replaces the default tool, I dont believe you can run them both
Scandisk in win2k is called chkdsk

C:\Winnt\system32\dfrg.msc

I'm sure it was part of the base install or an SP. There is a shortcut to it
under SystemTools in my Start Menu. If you don't have one you could still
create it.

You're right, Diskeeper replaced dfrg.msc. I could uninstall Diskeeper but
would it be worth it? Is the Windows default tool just as good?

You're right there, too. but it's not in System Tools. I found it through My
Computer, thanks to Dave.

I found the tools where you said they would be except Diskeeper has replaced
dfrg.msc as the default utility. I did find Check Now. How do I get to the
recovery console?

You click Start / Help, then look for help on Recovery Console. There is a
lot of help in Windows Help!

And if you 'explore' My computer, and select properties of a drive, you will
be given a number of options, in the window that opens

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks. At
the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a Windows 2000
installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery
Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have
the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%

I notice no one mentioned Defraggler
http://www.piriform.com/ Also on this site is an excellent cleaner,
CCleaner that I've used daily in W2K/XP/W98 for years.

I seldom defrag, but Defraggler seems to work quite well.

Has any one else here used it?
