scandisk, disk defragmenter

In trying to speed up my computer, I tried to run scandisk and also disk defragmenter both unsuccessfully. On scandisk the program starts but keeps shutting down and on disk defragmenter, the program does not start at all. Any suggestions or solutions?

Windows 2000 does not have "Scandisk". run r-click on the drive and
select properties and Tools then Check Now.
